The ACC gets under way early this week as the Virginia Tech Hokies head to Coral Gables to fight for their chance to play for the ACC title. The Hokies are 15-3 on Thursday nights but the Hurricanes will try to hand them their fourth loss on a Thursday as they are also positioning for a title run.

The Hokies, the Virginia Cavaliers, and the Miami Hurricanes are all a half-game behind the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (4-2) for the top spot in the ACC.

Both the Hurricanes and the Hokies are coming off of wins last week. The Hurricanes beat Virginia 24-17 while the Hokies upset No. 23 Maryland 23-13 ending a two game losing streak.

It was a significant win for the Hokies as they knocked off a top 25 ranked team which is always a bonus this deep into the season. It helps when you have a tailback named Darren Evans. Evans carried the ball 32 times for a total of 253 yards and 1 touchdown. He also set a school record by gaining the 253 yards which was previously held by Mike Imoh who boasted 243 yards rushing in one game during the 2004 season. Evans responded to an interview question- when asked how he managed to put up such incredible numbers- he credited his offensive line for opening the largest holes that he has seen in football game.

The Hokies are averaging 23.8 points per game while allowing 20.2 to their opponents. Virginia Tech QB Sean Glennon was 14-of-20 for 127 yards and 1 touchdown. Glennon needed all the help he could get as the Maryland defense was a tough group to work against.

Miami needed some extra time to finish off the Cavaliers last week but needless to say, they got the job done and keep their ACC title run alive as well. Hurricane QB Jacory Harris was 12-of-21 for 160 yards and 2 touchdowns. Harris tossed the game winner in overtime to Aldarius Johnson on a 9-yard timing pattern just inside the goal line for the go ahead score. Miami's running back, Graig Cooper contributed by carrying the ball 24 times for 131 yards.

The Hurricanes are putting up nearly 30 points per game, and giving up 22 points to the opposing team. The defense could be better for both of these squads as they simply give up too much in the 20 plus points per game.

For Miami fans it's been a while since the good old days of national championships and regular top 25 rankings but they may be on their way back as they had a solid recruiting year after last season. I like Miami's defense this week as they played a tough second half last week by shutting out Virginia. The momentum should carry over to this week's matchup.

The sports bettor may have a difficult time picking this game as both teams are close by the numbers but Miami is favored by most bookies at -4. The key for both teams will be defense. The Hurricanes might want to consider a plan to slow down Darren Evans who is running wild after his performance last week. The Hokies had a total of 273 yards on the ground versus Maryland. The Hurricanes put up 448 total yards despite 81 yards in penalties; they must clean up their game as this game has a lot at stake with ACC title hopes on the line.

Predictem Pick:
The Hurricanes clean up the penalties and play a tight game but it's Virginia Tech who comes out on top by a field goal, 24-21.
