Last year the New Mexico Lobos traveled to Utah and lost 28-10. This weekend the Lobos hope to return the favor on their own turf at University Stadium. The task will be monumental to say the least as the Utah Utes are currently ranked No. 10 in the nation and boast a perfect 8-0 mark.

If the Lobos plan on ending the Utes journey to a BCS Bowl game then they better sharpen up on both sides of the ball. The Lobos had four turnovers last week in a loss to the Air Force Falcons. New Mexico’s defense also allowed 23 points which is one point more than their season average for points against.

New Mexico freshman QB Brad Gruner was 8-of-11 for 83 yards and no TD’s. The workhorse for the Lobos was running back Rodney Ferguson who had 19 carries for 107 yards and 1 TD. The Lobos were up 10-0 early and about to go ahead 17-0 when Gruner fumbled the ball, which led to an Air Force touchdown return. The Lobos never got on track after the Falcons took the lead in the second half for good.

New Mexico is averaging 22 points per game but the defense is allowing too many (22), and they will need a super performance in order to stop Utah’s attack.

The Utes beat Colorado State 49-16 last week on their way to an 8-0 record for the fourth time in school history. Utah is putting up 39 points per game while only allowing 18 to their opponents. Utes QB Brian Johnson was 18-of-26 for 185 yards and 2 touchdowns plus 1 INT. Corbin Louks rushed for 109 yards and 2 TD’s on 5 carries. Louks also completed a pass for 37 yards.

Defensively the Utes were well balanced versus the pass and rush. Defensive end Paul Kruger tallied up 7 tackles and a tipped pass which led to an interception and score.

Utah has won 9 consecutive games and 20 straight as a ranked team. The Utes are looking for another BCS shot. Each week they get one step closer to a potential BCS Bowl game and I don’t see New Mexico as a distraction- just another “W” on the for the Utes.

If you’re a Utah fan you might want to take advantage of the early line.

This game will be all Utah barring some miracle turnaround by the Lobos. After losing to Air Force and turning the ball over four times Lobos head coach Rocky Long said “If you turn the ball over and then you can’t make a fourth and short, you’re going to lose.” Obviously the Lobos will address the poor play versus Air Force, but they will need a total collapse by the Utes if they plan on winning this weekend.
