Tennessee Titans at St. Louis Rams Spread Pick
Opening Line: Titans -2.5
Tennessee is coming off their bye week. St, Louis lost 14-9 on Monday night to Seattle.
The Titans offense gets a big boost with QB Jake Locker back as the starter. He was having a career year before a hip injury sidelined him and we're going to give him a pass on his first game back versus the 49ers where rust was obviously apparent in the first half. With the rust shaken off, Jake adds a different dimension to the offense as he is capable of sustaining drives with his feet. His 8-1 TD/INT ratio is amongst the best in the league and he played error-free football in the first four games. The Rams have a young secondary but they also have a lot of promising players. Locker has been adept at spreading the ball around but WR Kendall Wright is the top target. DE Robert Quinn has 10 sacks on the year and LT Michael Roos may need some help in containing him. St. Louis held Seattle to 44 yards rushing last week but has struggled in their other games. RB Chris Johnson hasnít had the type of year him or the team thought he would (3.2 ypc) but this looks like a good spot to get well.
The Rams offense is in trouble without QB Sam Bradford (IR). He was having his best season but now QB Kellen Clemens is under center. He did little to inspire confidence in his first start and has done little in a seemingly long career. There is some talent at receiver but Clemens has struggled with accuracy his whole time in the NFL. Tennessee's pass defense was horrendous last year but has shown real improvement in 2013. The Rams got 134 yards rushing from rookie RB Zac Stacy last week and will lean on him again this week. The Titans have surrendered eight rushing TDs this year but look for them to stack the box against Stacy. Clemens doesn't pose a big threat through the air but the unheralded Stacy could wear them down if he gets going.
ATS Game Pick
Neither of these teams figures to make the playoffs but we really like one team in this matchup. Locker has a big edge on Clemens in productivity and skill and we see him being the difference maker in this one. Tennessee committed no TOs in their first four games under Locker and we see that trend continuing in this game. Also, with the spread under a field goal, we feel better backing a Titans team that is just a little better overall than the Rams.
