The Super Bowl is rapidly approaching and many people are placing bets, whether it be a friendly wager, an office pool, or on an Internet gambling site. Wherever the bets are placed the Super Bowl is the largest betting event in the United States, as there is expected to be over $100 million bet on this year's game, and this is only through Las Vegas sportsbooks alone.

Here are some betting stories for the history of Super Bowl betting.

The biggest bet, on record, for the Super Bowl came in 1995 for Super Bowl XXIX between the San Francisco 49'ers and the San Diego Chargers. The moneyline bet was for $2.4 million on the 49'ers who were a huge -18.5 point favorite on the spread. The game was a blowout and the 49'ers beat the Chargers by 23 points. The $2.4 million dollar bet paid off 1 to 8 so the winning bet took a cool $300,000.

The largest Super Bowl betting payday was for the legendary gambler Bob Stupak. Stupak was a casino owner from Las Vegas who bet $1 million in 1989 on Cincinnati +7 against the San Francisco 49'ers in Super Bowl XXIII. The 49'ers won the game but they did not cover the spread as Stupak won his wager.

Back in 2001 golfer Phil Mickelson was considered to be unlucky because he could not win a major. He has since changed his luck with a few wins in the majors but in 2001 he was lucky betting on the Super Bowl. Before the 2000-2001 season Mickelson bet $20,000 on the Baltimore Ravens to win the Super Bowl and received 28-1 odds. Baltimore went on to win the Super Bowl and lefty won a cool $560,000. A few months later he did the same thing and bet $38,000 on the Arizona Diamondbacks to win the World Series, which they went on to do. Mickelson picked up $760,000 on that win as he received 38-1 odds before the baseball season began. It was later revealed that Mickelson was only a part investor in those bets and took home a 10th of the winnings, but even though that was the case nobody could call him unlucky anymore.
