San Diego Chargers at Oakland Raiders Betting Pick
Opening Line: San Diego -4.5
San Diego improved to 2-2 with a 30-21 win over visiting Dallas last week. Oakland dropped to 1-3 following a 24-14 loss to Washington last Sunday.
Chargers QB Philip Rivers set an NFL record last week by completing 83.3% of his passes while throwing for 400+ yards, the highest pct. ever by a QB throwing for that much yardage. He also completed 83.3% of his passes the previous week. He is playing very well right now and has a glittering 11-2 TD/INT ratio and a QB rating of 118.8. He should do well against this defense as the Raiders are allowing opposing QBs to complete 72.1% of their passes. They have also surrendered seven TD passes, haven't intercepted a pass and opposing QBs have amassed a QB rating of 113.2. SS Tyvon Branch is still out, robbing the secondary of their best player. TE Antonio Gates is playing very well right now and always gives Oakland fits. RB Danny Woodhead is the type of dual-threat back that has also haunted the Raiders over the past decade. Unlike previous seasons, Rivers is getting very good pass protection. The running game is doing just enough to keep defenses honest.
Oakland hopes to have QB Terrelle Pryor back as they can't endure another appearance by QB Matt Flynn. Pryor has the speed to make plays when the pocket collapses (which is all too frequent) but has done a decent job throwing from there as well. WR Denarius Moore is a legit deep threat but Pryor rarely has time to throw long. RB Rashad Jennings may get the call if oft-injured RB Darren McFadden (hamstring) can't go. He is also a good receiver but is by no means a playmaker. The O-line has played much worse than expected and have given up 14 sacks already. San Diego has mustered only nine sacks so far but look for some different blitz packages in an effort to confuse the O-line.
ATS Game Pick
The Chargers have dominated this series over the past 10 years (16-3 SU) and look for that to continue here. Rivers doesn't have a great wideout to throw to but is making the right throw almost every time. The backs and TE are key for the passing game and these are the type of players that always give the Raiders trouble. Oakland's offense is simply awful and they lack talent at almost every level offensively and defensively. Don't look for San Diego to overlook this divisional rival.
