NFL Week 1 Point Spreads

The 2012 NFL preseason has just gotten underway, but it is not too early to turn our attention to the opening lines for some of the more intriguing matchups in Week 1 of the regular season. The following is a brief preview and pick for a few of the games along with the NFL opening week 1 spreads as provided by 5Dimes.

Buffalo Bills vs. New York Jets
Pointspread: New York -4
Total Line: 42

The Bills ended the 2011 season with just one win in their last five games to finish 6-10 on the year but remain completely confident that their player personnel moves this past offseason have set the stage for a dramatic turnaround in 2012. There is no doubt that the addition of linebacker/defensive end Mario Williams should have a huge impact on improving Buffalo's defense but it still needs quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick to step-up on offense.

The Jets stumbled to an 8-8 finish last season and all the talk this training camp has been about how the team is going to get back to the basics of running the ball on offense and shutting teams down on defense. Unfortunately, until this team changes its overall attitude, it remains just talk.

The Bills may not win this game, but they will send a message that Buffalo is no longer an easy W on the schedule by keeping things close enough to cover with the four points.

San Francisco 49ers vs. Green Bay Packers
Pointspread: Green Bay -6
Total Line: 45

The 49ers took everyone by surprise last season with a 13-3 record in the regular season and a run to the NFC Championship Game in Jim Harbaugh's first season as head coach. Most of the pieces remain in place for another successful run this year, but this team will not sneak-up on anyone.

Green Bay has been waiting ever so patiently to play a meaningful game after get stunned at home by New York in the Divisional Playoffs. The Packers come into this season as the odds-on-favorites to win it all primarily because they are the best team in the league.

Opening day at Lambeau is a tough place to play under any circumstances let alone against a team that is looking to punch somebody in the mouth to prove it is still the best on the block. Look for Green Bay to make that statement at the 49ers expense with a victory that easily covers the six points.

Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Denver Broncos
Pointspread: Denver-1
Total Line: 44

Pittsburgh remains one of the top-five favorites to win the AFC this season, but it also comes into this year with a number of question marks as well. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will have to adapt to a new offensive scheme in his ninth year in the league without running back Rashard Mendenhall and possibly without wide receiver Mike Wallace.

Peyton Manning appears to be fully recovered from a neck injury and subsequent surgeries that caused the future ‘Hall of Famer' to miss the entire 2011 season. He is now with a hungry team that is favored to win its division and looking to prove everyone wrong who may have thought he was washed-up. This could be a very dangerous combination for any team visiting Mile High Stadium on opening day.

Unless Manning suffers some kind of setback between now and opening day, take Denver at home and give the one point as the Broncos also make an early statement that they are going to be a force to be reckoned with in the AFC.
