NFC South Betting Preview

New Orleans Saints - 3-2: The Saints had the best year in their franchise's history last season a year after enduring their worst. They have all their guns back on offense (minus injured WR Joe Horn) and added rookie WR Robert Meacham, a legit deep threat. They also upgraded a defense that allowed too many big plays last season with LB Brian Simmons, CB Jason David and S Kevin Kaesviharn. The Saints get the Ravens, Eagles and Bengals at home and have a HC in Sean Payton who won't let them get complacent about last season. Having QB Drew Brees on their side could be enough to hold off the Panthers.

Carolina Panthers - 7-4: Strictly going by the numbers, this should be the Panthers year. They are an every other year team and the calendar says this should be a good year. For them to win the division, QB Jake Delhomme has to bounce back from a down year, the running game and O-line have to flourish, the defense has to stay healthy and the team's impressive rookie crop has to contribute right away. If those things happen, this team could find themselves in the Super Bowl.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers - 4-1: This ranking changed in recent weeks, partly based on the Bucs but mostly because of the Falcons. T-Bay finally addressed a neglected defense that started to show its age last season. New starting LBs Cato June and Barrett Ruud bring speed and playmaking ability, while rookie DE Gaines Adams will get after the QB. The Bucs also upgraded at QB and the O-line and could be a decent sleeper pick. RB Carnell Williams and QB Jeff Garcia will determine how far this team goes.

Atlanta Falcons - 3-1: Expect these odds to go up as the Falcons are doing little to inspire hope. QB Michael Vick has shown little progression on the field and regressed off of it. New HC Bobby Petrino wants a power-running attack but lacks size on the O-line. The defense has already lost LB Demorrio Williams and DT Rod Coleman to offseason injuries and will be counting on three rookies to start. There is no more safety blanket behind Vick as backup QB Matt Schaub was dealt. If Vick is suspended, this team could really struggle. They should have dealt Vick and kept Schaub.
