Miami Hurricanes vs. Virginia Tech Hokies Point Spread
Point Spread Line: Miami -2
Moneyline: Hurricanes -130 / Hokies +110
Time: 8 PM EST Thursday October 23, 2014 on ESPN / Watch ESPN
This is the 2nd Thursday night game in a row for Virginia Tech, who lost last week to Pittsburgh in a big ACC match up. They are a home favorite facing a Miami team that has alternated wins and losses in their last 5 games. Both teams are sitting at 1-2 in conference play and while the BCS playoffs are likely out of the picture each team can improve their bowl situation with a win.
Virginia Tech had their 2-game winning streak snapped in their last game and while they played solid defense in that game their offense struggled. They have the nation's 20th ranked defense and will be facing a Miami offense that is balanced and scored 55 points in their last game.
Last season at Virginia Tech the Hokies beat the Hurricanes 42-24.
In their last games Miami beat Cincinnati 55-34 and Virginia Tech lost to Pittsburgh 21-16.
Miami is 3-4 ATS and they have an Over/Under record of 3-4 and Virginia Tech is 3-4 ATS with an Over/Under record of 2-4.
This season Virginia Tech is 2-2 at home and Miami is 0-3 on the road.
While Miami did not have a great defensive game against Cincinnati they had their best offensive output of the season. QB Brad Kaaya was solid going 17/24 for 286 yards with 3 TD and 0 INT and the rushing game was superb with 335 yards on the ground. Duke Johnson rushed for 162 yards on only 10 carries, with an 80-yard run, and Joseph Yearby had a 62-yard run and rushed for 113 yards.
Johnson is the leading rusher for the Canes and may be THE main player the Tech defense has to worry about. He has rushed for at least 100 yards in 3 straight games. Tech ranks 30th in the nation in run defense and one of the main reasons they lost to Pitt was that they gave up 210 rushing yards.
Hokies' QB Michael Brewer played well in the loss to Pitt passing for 265 yards with a TD and 0 INT, but he got no help from the run game, which had a grand total of 26 rushing yards. Isaiah Ford and Cam Phillips are his top 2 WR's and each is averaging over 12 yards per catch on the season. Tech leading rusher Marshawn Williams missed the game against Pitt, but is hopeful for this one. The Hokies really need him, as their 2nd leading RB is out for the season with an injury.
Miami stuffed the run in the Cincy game and while they did come up with 3 INT they gave up 355 passing yards.
Miami's defense ranks 56th in the nation against the run and 10th against the pass even though their secondary was torched in their last game.
Miami is 0-4 ATS in their last 4 road games, 4-11 ATS in their last 15 games overall, and they have an Over record of 4-0 in their last 4 games following a SU win of more than 20 points.
Virginia Tech is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall, 1-5 ATS in their last 6 home games, and they have an Under record of 4-1 in their last 5 games.
Virginia Tech is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 home games against Miami.
Point Spread Pick
The Hokies are really beat up in the backfield and we feel that they don't have enough of an aerial attack to do much damage on the scoreboard. The under line looks tempting but the laying less than a field goal and backing the road team here is where our bets are going to land.
