Kansas City Chiefs at Washington Redskins Point Spread Pick
Opening Line: Kansas City -3
Kansas City lost their third-straight game last week, dropping a 35-28 decision to Denver, their second loss to the Broncos in three weeks. Washington lost their fourth-straight game last Sunday, 24-17 to the New York Giants. They were also eliminated from the playoffs with that loss.
Don't blame the Chiefs offense for their three-game swoon. During their 9-0 start, they reached 28 points once, in Week 1. They are averaging almost 28 ppg during the losing streak. RB Jamaal Charles continues to be Mr. Everything for KC's offense. He leads the NFL in first downs, is second in TDs and yards from scrimmage, third in rushing and fourth in receptions by a back. He is also the only player to lead his team in rushing and receptions. The Redskins have been very good vs. the run in 2013 and they have held some good backs down. Because of his versatility, look for Charles to make an impact, either on the ground or through the air. QB Alex Smith is last in the NFL in yards per pass but is third in interception pct. He has started to air it out lately and hasn't been afraid to take some deep shots. That opportunity will certainly present itself in this game as the Redskins continue to get burned by the pass. Smith lacks quality targets but does have some players who can get deep. Look for Smith to have another big day as the offense has had to do more in recent weeks because of a failing defense.
Washington is averaging 13 ppg over the past three weeks and the players and coaches clearly aren't in sync. RB Alfred Morris (206-996-6) has been held to 78 yards on 25 carries the past two weeks as teams are content to let the Redskins try to beat them through the air. Look for KC's defense to focus on stopping Morris early and force Robert Griffin III to try and dissect them downfield. Griffin III is clearly not on the same page as the coaching staff and has been open about it. While WR Pierre Garcon is having a big year statistically (84-980-3) he has had some big drops and his late fumble last week ended any hope of a comeback. Rookie TE Jordan Reed, the team's second-leading receiver, has missed the past two games with a concussion and his status is up in the air. The Chiefs pass defense couldn't handle QBs Peyton Manning and Philip Rivers in the last three games but they should do better this week. They have only two sacks in the past five games and look for them to ratchet up the pressure on Griffin III, who is clearly not healed from his knee injury.
ATS Game Pick
Both of these teams are on multi-game losing streaks but the Chiefs are clearly the better team. The Redskins are weak vs. the pass and their offense isn't jelling. While Smith is by no means a gunslinger, look for him to try a few more deep passes this week and to lead Kansas City to a badly-needed road win.
