Cincinnati Bengals at San Diego Chargers Spread Pick
Opening Line: San Diego -1
Cincinnati had a bye last week after trouncing Cleveland 41-20 in their last outing. San Diego had a thrilling come-from-behind win last Sunday, a 41-38 victory at Kansas City.
The Bengals haven't had trouble scoring this season but they have been inconsistent at times. Despite scoring 41 points vs. the Browns, the offense had seven three-and-outs. The Chargers allow 276 yards passing per game and QB Andy Dalton should do well in this contest. WR A.J. Green is an elite talent and San Diego's lacks a player close to being a lock-down corner. If the defense doubles Green, WRs Marvin Jones and Mohamed Sanu and TEs Jermaine Gresham Gresham and rookie Tyler Eifert can exploit mismatches. All four players have 30+ receptions. Rookie RB Giovani Bernard has also chipped in with 42 catches. San Diego is dealing with some injury issues in their front seven and Dalton figures to be clean most of the afternoon. Bernard and RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis lead a rushing attack that doesn't scare anyone but Cincinnati won't abandon it even if the going is tough early.
Chargers' QB Philip Rivers is having a big bounce-back year after a couple of down years. He was fantastic last week (392 yards, 3 TD passes, 127.3 passer rating) but faces a stingy bunch this week (211 passing yards allowed per game). The Bengals have a good secondary but a great pass rush (even without injured DT Geno Atkins). San Diego's O-line has done a much better job in protecting Rivers in 2013 over 2012 but they have some injury concerns as well. San Diego is pretty mediocre in the run game and Cincinnati allows only 102 yards per game and hasn't allowed a rushing TD since Week 3. However, Rivers is playing very well right now and the coaches seem happy to entrust the offense in his hands. That could be a dangerous strategy vs. an opponent like Cincinnati.
ATS Game Pick
Both of these teams have shown they can score but only the Bengals have shown they can stop opposing offenses. Neither team is especially good at running the ball but Cincinnati is less likely to abandon it if they trail early. San Diego lost their previous three games before last week and has injuries to both lines. We'll side with the dog in this one as they are actually the better team and have the better defense.
