California will make the big trip down the Pacific coastline into Trojans territory this weekend for another PAC-10 interstate battle. The Golden Bears are coming into this game with a lot of confidence as they beat the Oregon Ducks last week 26-16, thus knocking the Ducks out of the top 25.

Bear’s QB Kevin Riley started the game and went 7-of-12 for 80 yards and a TD plus 1 INT before being injured and replaced by Nate Longshore. Longshore was 13-of-27 for 136 yards and a TD. Running back Jahvid Best had 16 carries for 93 yards.

But it was Cal’s defense that ultimately decided this game as they were a wall on most possessions. The Bears allowed the Ducks just 5-of-23 third and fourth down conversions. The Bears are averaging 36.4 points per game while giving up 21 to their opponents. Running back Shane Vereen secured the win when he scampered for a 2-yard touchdown run to make it 26-16.

California is currently a 20.5 dog on the road, and given their points against per game that may be a generous mark by the bookies.

USC got back on track after a tough win two weeks ago versus Arizona (17-10) by hosting the University of Washington. The Trojans trounced the Huskies 56-0! USC remains undefeated at home this season (4-0) and they are putting up 40.3 points per game and only allowing 7.1 to their opponents.

Trojan’s QB Mark Sanchez had another solid performance as he was 15-of-19 for 167 yards and 2 TDs. Trojan running back C.J. Gable carried the ball 10 times for 108 yards and 2 TDs. Wide receiver Patrick Turner had 6 catches for 100 yards and 2 TDs. It was just another dominant outing for the Trojans who, despite a close game against the Wildcats, have destroyed all of their opponents save for the Oregon State loss.

For the Trojans it was their third shut out of the year and a complete sweep of the Washington State PAC-10 teams as they combined to shut out both schools 125-0! Yeah, football in Washington State is hurting right now in a “big” way. Thank God for the Prosser Mustangs High School Team! They seem to be the only team that wins consistently.

USC earned its 7th consecutive win against the Huskies. I don’t know exactly why the Huskies have gone from a traditional powerhouse team to a winless joke but Seattle residents are not very happy as the Seahawks of the NFL are in the tank as well.

California may have a legitimate chance this weekend if they can slow down the Trojan’s high flying offense. I know that sounds like a broken-record but that’s the key to beating USC along with a hand, a helmet, and “anything” in Sanchez’s grill that will pressure his game.

Cal only has two losses on the season and can improve their chances for a more significant bowl game if they upset the Trojans this Saturday. USC is hoping to win out, and crossing their fingers for the three unbeaten teams (Penn State, Alabama, Texas Tech) to go down.
