The BYU Cougars travel to Colorado Springs this weekend for a battle against the 8-2 Air Force Falcons who are proving that they are a team to be taken seriously. The Falcons displayed their new found weapon in the “quick strike” passing and rushing game, as they unleashed an offensive attack through the air and on the ground last week versus Colorado State.
Meanwhile, BYU destroyed San Diego State 41-12. The Cougars jumped out to a 27-0 lead which they carried into the third quarter before San Diego State even got on the board. The Cougars are averaging 36.2 points per game and a lot of the damage they do to other squads is through the air.
BYU QB Max Hall had another great performance as he tossed three touchdown passes on 25-of-30 passing for 317 yards. Halls favorite target was once again Austin Collie who had 9 catches for 127 yards and 2 touchdowns. Collie’s longest TD connection with Hall was good for 61 yards.
The Cougars have now won 18 straight home games which puts them in a tie with Boise State for the second longest active home win streak in the nation. Also, BYU has won 21 of their last 22 conference games.
Air Force has their offense heading in the right direction behind freshman quarterback Tim Jefferson as he threw two touchdown passes along with 171 yards in the Falcon’s 38-17 win over the Colorado State Rams.
Air Force also has another freshman making an impact in running back, Asher Clark, who ran for 2 touchdowns and 136 yards on 16 carries. The punch in the offense comes well received for the Falcons as they traditionally pound the ball on the ground; but with the pass game backed up by a running threat, now defenses will be guessing more, thus allowing the Falcons to open it up for some big plays. Wide receiver, Kyle Halderman is a prime example of the “big play” as he pulled in a 74-yard touchdown pass from Jefferson in the second quarter to break a 14-14 tie.
The Falcon’s defense did not allow Colorado State to score in the second half. The Falcon’s only allow 17.3 points per game to their opponents. BYU is not far behind in defense as they give up 18.2 points to their counter parts.
Clearly both of these teams are well disciplined and stingy on defense. The challenge in this matchup will be which team can gain the momentum and keep it by controlling the clock and the ball. BYU and Max Hall will have their say as Hall is as confident as any top-ranked QB in the country. Will the freshman of Air Force be able to rise for the big game?
The bookies over at the Las Vegas Hilton and Caesar’s Palace, as well as most online books have the BYU Cougars as 5.5 favorites on the road. With only three losses this season between these two teams it should be worth the watch and the wager! I like the Falcons freshman heart and soul, but BYU, behind the leadership and poise of Hall, may be too much for Air Force to handle.
Predictem Pick:
Air Force has won 5 in a row. BYU ends the Falcon’s winning streak. The Cougars win but don’t cover the spread, 24-21.
