The Alabama Crimson Tide remain the only undefeated BCS team left in the nation. The Crimson Tide have one more game left for the regular season to complete the perfect regular season and that game is with in-state archrival the Auburn Tigers. History has shown you can throw out how either of the two teams have played all season, throw out the points spread, it’s a rivalry game and anything can happen.
Alabama had an off week this past weekend and you would expect them to be will rested. Alabama has already clinched their ticket to Atlanta to play in the SEC Championship at the end of the season, but they have much bigger anticipations. The Crimson Tide need to run the table, because a loss this late in the season would most likely knock them out of playing for the National Championship. However, before Alabama can start thinking about championships they need to handle business against their in-state nemesis.
The Auburn Tigers have had a disastrous season standing at a season mark of 5-6. Auburn was ranked as high as the number 10 ranking in the nation after a 3-0 start this year. Since then, Auburn has only won 2 of their last 6 games and become on of the biggest disappointment stories in college football. Auburn problems have been placed solely on the offense which has underperformed all season. Midway through the season the Tigers fired offensive coordinator Tony Franklin, but the scoring has still not improved. Auburn has not scored over 22 points against a Division I team this season and perhaps that found some answers with the bye week heading into the Alabama game.
Alabama offense success has been based around the solid running game of junior running back Glen Coffee. Coffee has 179 carries this season for 1091 yards, 8 touchdowns, and an outstanding 6.1 yards per carry. The leader for the entire team rest in the hands of senior QB John Parker Wilson. Wilson is completing 60% on the season for 1775 yards, 8 touchdowns, and 5 picks. Wilson favorite target has been WR Julio Jones. Jones is averaging 16 yards per reception with 687 yards this season and 4 touchdowns. Keep an eye on this trio this weekend as they look to make some big plays to complete the perfect season.
Auburn has not had much to show for this season on offense. QB Kodi Burns has received the majority of the snaps behind center in recent weeks and has played fairly well. Burns is more of a running quarterback than that of a passer. Burns has only thrown 2 TDs in the air this season but has rushed for 5 touchdowns this season. Burns has also thrown for 7 interceptions this season, but 6 of those picks came in a 3 game stretch. Burns has not turned the ball over in 3 weeks and will need to control the ball well again this weekend. Auburn running back Ben Tate has also had some highlights running the ball this season. Tate has rushed for 652 yards this season with 3 TDs. Look for Burns and Tate to try and establish the running game against a tough Alabama defense.
Betus.com has opened the betting line favoring the number 1 team in the nation by 2 touchdowns at (-14). Early betting action has nearly 70% of the betting public siding with the Crimson Tide ATS. The over/under for game has been posted at 41. ML numbers have Alabama listed at -700 while having Auburn at +500.
Auburn has been surrounded by a solid defense this season. The Tigers rank 9th nationally in scoring defense holding teams to 16 points per game. The Auburn defense has held opposing offenses to 309 yards of total offense and while only allowing 178 passing yards per game ranking in the top 25 in both categories. Auburn has had four games this season with a game total of 30 or less points including an unusual 3-2 baseball type score win over Mississippi Sate. The Tigers hope their defense can come up big again this rivalry weekend.
Speaking of great defenses, Alabama has one of the best defenses in the nation. The Crimson Tide rank 3rd in the nation in total defense holding offenses to a low 255 yards per game. Alabama has the 3rd ranked rush defense in the nation allowing 75 yards per game on the ground. The rush defense could play a big factor considering Auburn offense is based around their running game. The Alabama defense is only allowing 12 points per game this season and looks to have their way with the struggling Auburn offensive attack.
Betting Trends…
Alabama is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games while going on the under total in 5 of their last 6 games. The Crimson Tide is also 5-0 SU in their last 5 at home. Auburn is only 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games on the road while going 1-5 SU in those 6 games. In the Auburn-Alabama series 10 of the last 15 have gone on the under total while Auburn has won the last 6 meetings against Alabama.
