AFC West Betting Preview

San Diego Chargers - 2-3: For a team that went 14-2, the Chargers offseason played like a team that went 2-14. Off. Co. Cam Cameron jumped ship to take the Dolphins job while Def. Co. Wade Phillips took the top job in Dallas. GM A.J. Smith got rid of two people he hated, firing HC Marty Schottenheimer and releasing ILB Donnie Edwards (the team's leading tackler each of the last five years). Little was added to the roster and the team hopes to build from within with two new ILBs and a few rookies. San Diego has the best player in football in RB LaDainian Tomlinson but questions remain how good this team is, given their lack of playoff success. New HC Norv Turner has been a great Off. Co. but failed twice as a HC. Look for an intense battle with Denver for the top spot in the division.

Denver Broncos - 7-5: After a busy offseason, especially compared with the Chargers inactivity, the Broncos are poised to battle for the division crown. They signed three FAs who figure to start (OLB Warrick Holdman, RB Travis Henry and TE Daniel Graham) traded for CB Dre' Bly and added three DL in the draft. QB Jay Cutler should be better in his second season and HC Mike Shanahan is driven to prove he can win a big game without QB John Elway. A favorable schedule means the Broncos should go down to the wire with the Chargers.

Oakland Raiders - 15-1: The longest odds on the board, we think the Raiders can finish ahead of the Chiefs. Their defense ranked third last season, No.1 vs. the pass and that was with a bunch of kids who knew the offense would do nothing. The offense has added players everywhere with RB Domenic Rhodes, FB Justin Griffith, rookie TE Zach Miller, G Cooper Carlisle, WR Travis Taylor and QBs Josh McCown and rookie JaMarcus Russell all expected to contribute. Throw in a young, energetic offensive coach in Lane Kiffin and improvements should be made. The Raiders have the toughest schedule in the league but they should be quite a bit better than last season.

Kansas City Chiefs - 6-1: The wheels have come off in KC and disgruntlement is everywhere. QB Trent Green was finally traded and the team hopes QB Brodie Croyle wins the starting job, despite the success QB Damon Huard enjoyed last year. The O-line lost All World G Will Shields and T Jordan Black and RB Larry Johnson is unhappy with the direction of the team. Look for the O-line to cripple the offense. The defense welcomes back ILB Donnie Edwards but he's past 30 and won't be around for the rebirth. DE Jared Allen, the sack leader, is out the first four games due to suspension and is unhappy with his contract situation. They could still finish ahead of the Raiders but are no threat to the top two teams.
