AFC South Betting Preview

Indianapolis Colts - 1-3: They finally won the Super Bowl last season and have now been largely forgotten. Few teams were hit by more defections than the Colts who lost starting CBs Nick Harper and Jason David and their best LB, OLB Cato June. Their top two picks in the draft were used to bolster the, you guessed it, No.3 rated offense. The run defense was horrible last season but really stiffened up when 5'8" FS Bob Sanders returned from injury. Something is wrong with that picture but the results are there. The offense figures to remain a strength but a backup RB has to emerge. The defense needs their bevy of young corners to step up and for some playmakers to emerge at LB. With Jacksonville as the only serious contender, look for Indy to cruise to another division title.

Jacksonville Jaguars - 11-4: The Jags fell to earth last season and missed the playoffs because they lost twice to the lowly Texans. The offense, particularly the passing game, was the culprit. The running game is strong but the team lacks a leader at QB. HC Jack Del Rio has named Byron Leftwich the starter but the club could be interested in Daunte Culpepper. The defense ranked second last season and gets DE Reggie Hayward and MLB Mike Peterson back from injury. Rookie FS Reggie Nelson should fit like a glove and the team likes its young safeties so much, they cut oft-injured SS Donovin Darius. Until their QB situation stabilizes, they are no match for the Colts in the standings.

Tennessee Titans - 6-1: The Titans won six of their last seven games last year (including three straight vs. playoff teams) but have had a rough offseason. They lost their best RB and WR and CB 'Pacman Jones' was suspended for the season. They had a poor draft and now QB Vince Young is laid up with an injury (the Madden Curse strikes again for the sixth-straight year!). Despite Young's play last season, the offense ranked 27th (30th in passing). They have no No.1 receiver and will be relying on recently-resigned RB Chris Brown to be their top runner. This team could be overtaken by the Texans as soon as this season.

Houston Texans - 12-1: Despite listing them fourth, we think Houston has a real shot to leapfrog Tennessee. New QB Matt Schaub has only two career starts (both losses) but showed enough for the Texans to grab him. They also added RB Ahman Green and OT Jordan Black to jumpstart an offense that has been in park since the team's inception. The defense added rookie DT Amobi Okoye, the second-youngest player (19) ever drafted. Houston still has lots of ground to cover to reach Indy and even Jacksonville, but this could be the year they show real improvement.
