AFC East Betting Preview

New England Patriots - 1-6: Now there's a bet you want to take! While the numbers are crazy, the Pats should have little trouble winning the division. They almost made it to the Super Bowl last year and have greatly added to their receiving corps. OLB Adalius Thomas was also a huge addition but their starting LBs are all over 30 years of age and have little depth behind them. CB Asante Samuel could hold out and a great D-line has little depth as well. Offensively, we'll see if RB Laurence Maroney can handle the full-time running chores. NE had trouble defending the pass last year but rookie FS Brandon Merriweather should help in that area. The Pats get the Chargers and Eagles at home but have to visit the Bengals, Cowboys, Colts and Ravens. Despite the unexpected success of the Jets last year, NE is one of the safest picks this season (barring an injury to QB Tom Brady of course).

New York Jets - 4-1: The Jets surprised many last year and were almost as big a story as the Saints. NY acquired RB Thomas Jones for a cheap price and not liking the talent in the draft this year, turned four first-day picks into two and selected CB Darrelle Revis and ILB David Harris. Both figure to start. The offense will be better with Jones and the defense figures to get better but their best defender (ILB Jonathan Vilma) may not be a good fit in the 3-4. They don't have the horses to catch the Patriots and would need a Brady injury to challenge.

Buffalo Bills - 10-1: The Bills are achieving their goal of getting younger but maybe at the expense of getting better, at least in the short term. The defense ranked 18th last season (28th vs. the run) and they jettisoned two starting 30+ LBs. The secondary will start three second-year players but they held up last year. The O-line has been improved and rookie RB Marshawn Lynch figures to do more than RB Willis McGahee could. Still, this team has a ways to go before they challenge the Jets, let alone the Patriots.

Miami Dolphins - 10-1: This team isn't in a freefall but things are teetering precipitously. New QB Trent Green figures to start but he's one hit away from retirement. QB Daunte Culpepper is still on the team but not allowed to practice. The team bypassed QB Brady Quinn in the draft to take …WR Ted Ginn Jr.? His foot is still in a protective boot. The defense played well last season but is getting older in the front seven. Their secondary scares no one. New HC Cam Cameron had little success as a HC at Indiana and figures to struggle in South Beach.
